Media and Society

Positive and Negative aspects of Social Media

The social media, such a controversial topic. This modern invention has become such a tremendous part of our every day life, I honestly could not imgine a world were it does not exsist. The social media is a whole new way of life, and people are both loving and hating it. Social media brings oppertunities that we have never had before, it is now possible to make a living of only posting pictures to instagram! It is actually pretty insane. You can have a whole carrier on the internet, and not having to do anything else for the rest of your life, this has become a job, and the people who do it are called influencers.

There are mant differents apps that qualify as social media, and they are constantly creating new apps and expanding the platforms. But the most popular ones must be Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Youtube and Facebook. People spend hours of their day going back and forth between these apps looking for entertainment, to communicate with other people, and constantly knowing what others are doing. Getting a hold of another person has never been so easy. People love social media, and they especially love to use it to show off the good life. You have not been on a hiking trip, or to a nice resturant, or on vacation, without it beeing documentet and portrayed on social media. Remeber back in the day when our parents would tell us not to post anywhere that we are going out of town, so the burgulers did not know that the house was empty? And now the first thing our parents do when we are going away, is to post it to facebook! I think it is safe to say that things have changed A LOT.

Social media sounds amazing does it not? But of course, there are multiple downsides to this concept aswell. Many people think that we have become overly addicted to social media, and it is probably true. I can hardly go an hour without checking my phone, and I can definitely not make it for a day without my phone. Social meida is beeing critized for makeing people stop living in the moment, it makes us miss out on what is actually going on around us, because we are to focused on getting it on camra or to show it off to others. Often on social media peolpe only like to share the good things, wich makes sense, but it can be very misleading at times. You are portraying yourself to be living this amazing life without any problems or insecjurities, when really you are just hiding your flaws from the internet. This is also concidered a problem, because it makes peolpe feel like their life will never be as good as the ones on social media. The same goes for the countless of Instagram models who photoshop their photos. This creates an extremely false bodyimage and is wrong in so many ways. It makes us feel insecure and bad about our selfs and our bodies, when really, the people who are posting those pictures dont look like that either.

In my personal opinion, I think social media is great. But that it goes without saying, that there is plenty of room for improvement.

The refugee crisis

What can the world do to improve the current refugee crisis?

Worldwide, there is more than 21 million people who have been forced to flee abroad. Even though most rich countries are treating refugees as if they’re not their responsibility, the governments in the countries the refugees are fleeing to, still have a duty to help. The richer countries have concerns about being invaded and overflooded by people with another ethnicity, and therefor allows poorer country to take on almost all of the refugees.

In my opinion, to help the refugees, we need to donate more money, and create a better system for how we are handling the refugees that are seeking asylum in our country. The richer countries should make more room and better programs for asylum recipients. We have to help integrate them in the currents society they are now in. we have to put a final stop to prejudices which leads to racism and remember that asylum is a human right. Everyone has a right to live in country where there is safe, and no harm done to any innocent beings. Also, we should step in and try to stop the situation that is going on in their original country. If we can participate in putting the war and the persecution to an end, there will no longer be any refugees.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
